Number 1

  1. Start with a square cake (24 cm). Cut into 3 equal strips.
  2. Make a diagonal cut in the third strip, near the top, then assemble by arranging the pieces together to create a number one.

Number 2

  1. Start with a round cake (24 cm) and a loaf cake (900 g/1lb).
  2. Using a round cutter, cut out the centre of the round cake and set aside the middle.
  3. Cut the round cake to create 2 small sections and one large section.
  4. To assemble, place the loaf cake at the bottom. Place one of the smaller sections above to create the bottom curve of the number.
  5. Finish with the largest section of cake to create the number 2 and set aside any remaining cake.

Number 3

  1. Start with 2 round cakes (24 cm).
  2. Using a round cutter, cut out the middle section of both cakes and set aside the middle.
  3. Cut each cake to create 2 sections and set aside the smaller sections from both.
  4. To assemble, place the 2 larger sections together to create the number 3.

Number 4

  1. Start with a square cake (24 cm).
  2. Cut the cake into 3 equal strips.
  3. Make a diagonal cut in the second strip, near the top and set aside the small diagonal off-cut.
  4. Cut the third strip into 2, one section slightly large than the other.
  5. To assemble, place the first strip horizontally. Place the second strip with the diagonal top edge above at a slight angle (with the diagonal edge on top of the first strip).
  6. Place the final 2 cake pieces in place to create the number 4, with the smaller piece above and the longer piece below.

Number 5

  1. Start with a round cake (24 cm) and a loaf cake (900 g/1lb).
  2. Using a round cutter, cut out the middle section of the round cake and set aside the middle.
  3. Cut out 2 small sections from the round cake as in the picture above.
  4. Cut the loaf cake into two sections, one slightly larger than the other.
  5. To assemble, place the larger section of round cake, with the large cut out to the left and the smaller cut out at the top, to create the bottom part of the number 5.
  6. Place the smaller section of loaf cake in the cut out and the larger section horizontally on top.
  7. Trim the remaining cut-out of the round cake to fill in the gap and create the number 5.
